Symphony No. One, "Nordic"
The Livermore-Amador Symphony currently consists of approximately sixty vol-
unteer musicians, ranging from high school age to ninety years old. Rehearsals are
weekly, from mid-September through mid-May. The concert season consists of four
main concerts: December, February, March and May. In addition, a Pops concert
is performed on a Friday and Saturday in mid-October. This event is sponsored by
the Livermore-Amador Symphony Guild, the fund-raising branch of the organiza-
tion, made up of hard working, dedicated supporters of the symphony.
The Symphony continues its bicentennial tribute to Felix Mendelssohn with his incidental music
written in 1843 for Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. American-born composer
Howard Hanson, was influenced by the music of Jan Sibelius. The Nordic symphony, composed
in 1923, reflects his impressions of his Swedish heritage.
The Livermore-Amador Symphony Association hosts the Competition for
Young Musicians in the fall of every year. It is open to instrumentalists and
vocalists who reside or attend school in Livermore, Pleasanton, Sunol, Dublin,
or San Ramon. Students are eligible through grade 12. These annual com-
petitions have consistently shown a high quality of musicianship. Winners of
the 36th Competition perform with the Symphony tonight. They are Annie
Sandholtz on violin and Bronwyn Hagerty on cello.
